Light at the Edge
Hampstead

I photographed familiar sights in Hampstead: buildings and places on Hampstead Heath, Church Row, the Freud Museum, the Tavistock Clinic, the Arts and Crafts Quaker meeting house and a house in Frognal Lane that I return to time after time. Back in the studio the photographs are then transformed into semi abstract or abstract images, multi layered with collage, paper and lace, or with printing, drawing and painting.

This exhibition at Burgh House enquires into what is both well known and more hidden about Hampstead. The images are mysterious, many of them based on photographs taken in the winter, at sunset or dusk, at the darkest time of day, before night begins. I am fascinated by twilight images in their ambiguity and mystery. There is a tension between light and darkness, both in landscape and human experience and many of the images show sources of light illuminating prevailing darkness.
